TRWD’s Communication and Community Outreach Department wins two national awards for Centennial History Book.

By August 13, 2025

The Tarrant Regional Water District’s Communications and Community Outreach team has been honored with two prestigious 2025 Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards from the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC). These national and international awards recognize excellence in government communications across the country.

Both awards were earned for “Our 100-Year Legacy,” a 130+ page book chronicling TRWD’s remarkable century of service to North Texas. The publication celebrates the district’s achievements, shares challenges faced and innovative solutions, spotlights dedicated 50-year employees, includes fun facts and “did you know” features, and showcases TRWD’s current impact and future plans. Historical imagery and newspaper clippings throughout the book highlight the agency’s incredible evolution over the past 100 years.

“Last year we celebrated TRWD’s centennial year, and out of all the incredible things we did, the book was my favorite,” said Natasha Hill, Director of Communications and Community Outreach. “In 2023, we were contemplating whether to do a book or not, but obviously we absolutely had to! We couldn’t have done the book without the help of our retirees and subject matter experts. The story is for them and for everyone who has helped TRWD become what it is today.”

The Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards program annually recognizes outstanding work in government communications, highlighting both TRWD’s rich history and the communications team’s skill in bringing that story to life..

The book made its debut at TRWD’s 100th birthday luncheon in October 2024, where it was distributed to employees. The scene that followed was unforgettable. Employees were scattered throughout the venue, reading, smiling, laughing, and looking on in awe as they discovered stories from the past. The response was so enthusiastic that TRWD ran out of books and had to place another order at employees’ request.

“That’s how we knew we did a good job telling the district’s story, by anxiously watching the faces and reactions of 200+ employees as we handed out the books. They loved it. It was an incredible feeling and relief,” Hill added.
