Making Every Drop Count: How TRWD is Expanding Local Water Supplies

As North Texas continues to grow, planning for the future means looking for opportunities to make the most of every available water resource.

Water doesn’t stop being valuable after it’s been used once. With the right infrastructure, it can become part of tomorrow’s water supply.

That’s the idea behind a new TRWD project that recently received $55 million in financing through the Texas Water Development Board’s State Water Implementation Fund for Texas (SWIFT) program.

The project will capture highly treated water released from Fort Worth’s Mary’s Creek Water Reclamation Facility before it continues downstream. That water will be collected and transmitted into the western portion of TRWD’s raw water delivery system, where it will help meet the region’s growing needs.

This type of project reflects TRWD’s long-term approach to water management. Communities will grow, and water demand will increase, so strategies such as water reuse, conservation, and infrastructure improvements are increasingly important. They help stretch existing supplies, improve reliability during drought, and reduce the need for more costly alternatives.

The SWIFT financing also helps lower the overall cost of the project, with an estimated $6.1 million in savings over the life of the loan. Those savings will be reinvested into future water infrastructure that benefits the region.

Water planning often happens years before additional supplies are needed. Projects like this are part of TRWD’s ongoing work, investing today to help ensure North Texas has a reliable water supply for generations to come.
