Welder – Seasonal

Location: Fort Worth, TX

Type of Employment: Temporary Position (40 hours per week or more)

Position summary:

The Seasonal Welder is responsible for safely performing welding techniques on various TRWD projects, assisting Welder Is, IIs and IIIs on more complex welding projects and keeping the equipment and work areas in clean and in good working order.  The Seasonal Welder works as part of a team to assist with other duties such as vegetation maintenance, structure inspection and repair, and manual labor.

 

Qualifications required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience using a cutting torch, grinding, and basic welding
  • Painting experience
  • Knowledge of basic welding safety and Hot Work permits

 

Functions and responsibilities:

  • Weld components in flat and vertical positions
  • Operate safety equipment, use safe work habits and maintain a clean, organized work environment
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
  • Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals
  • Operate a oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, or carbon arc gouger
  • Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment
  • Remove rough spots from workpieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
  • Position and secure workpieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors
  • Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths
  • Cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders, and templates, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knives
  • Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments
  • Operate metal shaping, straightening, and bending machines, such as brakes, iron worker, cutting torches, hand tools, band saws and shears
  • Set up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete work
  • Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies
  • Mix and apply protective coatings to products
  • Interact and coordinate with other TRWD personnel
  • Perform general maintenance of TRWD structures and grounds including pipeline and floodway
  • After hours Emergency Response
  • Perform other duties as required

  • Physical demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and will occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically resides out in the field exposing the employee to weather conditions prevalent at the time. This position will also work in confined spaces, on water ways such as lakes or rivers, and at various heights.

Hourly Rate: $15/hr

Operations Season: February through November
